PFN releases four translation-model sizes under its Community License.

ISD view: why it matters

Local translation can be evaluated without treating a downloadable model as unrestricted commercial software.

What happened

Preferred Networks announced the weights on 5 November. PFN describes four sizes—0.8B, 2B, 8B and 31B—and translation across 53 languages. The PLaMo Community License has commercial conditions: PFN’s model card says commercial use requires registration where the user or its affiliates had revenue or sales of JPY 1 billion or less in the most recent fiscal year, and a separate agreement above that threshold. Personal and non-commercial use requires no registration. PFN’s smartphone demonstration is not a released phone app.

Why it matters: Local translation can be evaluated without treating a downloadable model as unrestricted commercial software.
